Lighting Lives: Manipur Women Become Barefoot Solar Engineers!

Jun 12, 2024

At Barefoot College, Tilonia, an inspiring graduation ceremony celebrated the remarkable journey of 30 determined women from 18 villages across six districts of Manipur. These women, through an HDFC Parivartan-funded initiative, transformed into skilled Barefoot Solar Engineers and the globally renowned Solar Mamas.
During an intensive three-month program, these women learned to assemble, install, repair, and maintain solar lanterns, torches, and home lighting systems. Advanced training in mini and micro grids further empowered them to light up 550 homes in remote areas—homes that lack electricity or endure minimal power supply.
But the training extended beyond solar energy. These women also explored water testing, waste management, rainwater harvesting, nursery development, recycling, puppet-making, sanitary pad production, and stitching, making them true champions of sustainable development.
At the ceremony, the newly minted solar engineers showcased their skills and shared their stories of transformation. Their determination to bring sustainable energy solutions to their communities left everyone inspired.
A Global Movement of Change:
Barefoot College has trained over 3,000 women from 96 countries, helping them bring light to 75,000+ homes worldwide. These Solar Mamas are driving change, one village at a time, ensuring that sustainable energy reaches even the most remote corners of the world.
The event concluded with certificates and honours presented by Sowmya Kidambi, Director of Barefoot College, alongside representatives from HDFC Bank Parivartan and our partner NGOs MaolKeki Foundation and Nest Lamka from Manipur.
Together, we are not just illuminating homes; we’re empowering communities and transforming lives
