In July 2024, a new book was published to celebrate 50 Years of Barefoot College empowering rural communities.
Founded by visionary Bunker Roy, the Barefoot College journey is a testament to traditional knowledge and sustainable progress.
This compendium of stories, edited by Heather MC Malcolm and with inputs from Aruna Roy, brings together half a century of Barefoot College stories, from the seed of an idea to the global impact it has today.
Following the Gandhian philosophy that technology should be demystified, and its control decentralised and put into the hands of the rural poor, the Barefoot College has positively impacted the lives of more than 10 million people across 96 countries.
By empowering Barefoot Professionals in rural communities with a blend of traditional and modern approaches, more than 5,000 last-mile villages now have clean water and energy, education and livelihoods, and a thriving natural environment.
Follow the footsteps of Bunker Roy on his unique path to global impact.
“Listen to the ordinary people. They have all the solutions in the world.” Bunker Roy
